It has been recognized that the quality of instruction at secondary schools in Laos is low and that this critical issue must be addressed to help further the education of youth and to solve the current unproductive teaching problems. The Teacher Training Project was initiated to improve the mathematical and scientific knowledge of upper secondary school teachers through holding workshops hosted by Provincial Education Services (PES) and through developing textbooks and teachers’ guidebooks for teaching in four subjects: mathematics, physics, chemistry, and biology. The workshops have been organized since 2002 through the support of the East Asian Circle of Applied Technology (EACAT). The project has shown marked success in strengthening teachers’ academic skills, knowledge, and pedagogical capabilities, particularly in Luangphabang province.
