The EDF-Lao Scholarship Project (also known as the Darunee Scholarship) aims to promote primary education in poor rural areas in the central and southern parts of Laos. The objectives are to provide primary (P3 to P5) and lower secondary (M1 to M3) education scholarships for needy children in rural schools, to reduce poverty in families and the financial burden on parents for providing supporting learning materials, and to reduce the drop-out rate of primary school students due to poverty in the family and lack of educational opportunity. The scholarships also support materials for schools and promote learning for slow-learning children at the primary school level by providing supplementary classes.
