The Rural Ethnic Teacher Project started in 2004 because of rural conditions and requirements. In some remote areas, there is only one teacher who has to be responsible for teaching all grades from P1 to P5. Moreover, the quality of the teachers in remote areas is considerably low compared to those in the main towns or cities. The lack of both teacher quantity and quality is recognized as a chronic problem working against socio-economic development through rural education improvements in Laos. The Rural Ethnic Teacher Project is a scholarship program for young ethnic students who finish their upper secondary school and would like a teaching career, and the hope is that the program will improve the situation.
The objective is:
- cultivate local ethnic teachers
- raise awareness on the importance of education among local ethnic people
- improve children’s education in local ethnic communities
- eradicate illiteracy among children in local ethnic communities
